Gervase Markham

Kabbo

"Kabbo" is the first Bengali poem apps in Firefox Marketplace.

For the last couple of months, i was working on some Firefox OS apps ideas. After analysis, I feel the shortage of Bengali literature based apps in Firefox Marketplace. So i engaged myself for developing "Kabbo", a collection of 100+ Bengali poems apps. This December the apps published in Firefox marketplace. Initially there are some basic features like platform independent, offline usability, compatible in all Firefox, poem search option and so on.

In this version added 9 poems of Satyendranath Dutta, 5 poems of Jogindranath Sarkar, 50 poems of Sukumar Ray, 4 poems of Jatindramohan Bagchi, 24 poems of Rabindranath Tagore and 10 unsorted poems.

Now based on the feedback from the users, working on the next version update of the apps.

Mozilla Reps Camp 2013

Mozilla Reps Camp is a yearly meeting of the Council members and Reps mentors for discussion of different topics, review our status and as well as planning for upcoming year.

This year the Camp city was Madrid, Spain, from 30th August to 1st September, 2013 and the theme of the Camp - Building Communities

I applied for the Schengen Visa and lately received the visa approval after some complications. As i am the only attendee from Bangladesh for the ReMo camp, i started my journey for the camp from Dhaka - Istanbul - Madrid. Mozilla booked my flight with TURKISH AIRLINES. The flight was good.

I meet with Alfredos Panagiotis Damkalis aka fredy at the Istanbul Airport. We ride the same flight from Istanbul to Madrid. From the Airport we decided to take the metro. After going the halfway we have to reroute our way to the Hotel, because of a line was closed for construction. Lastly reached the Radisson Blu Hotel Madrid Prado. I shared room with my mentor Vineel from India.

This camp reminds me of my previous attended Mozilla Reps Camp 2012, Berlin. This year many faces were missing from the previous camp but meet some new mozillians (face to face) for the first time.

We all wear special cool yellow vests during most of our sessions in Hub Madrid.

Thrilling camp days passed  with brainstorming, jotting ideas, action plans and so on... We do swot analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), also divided into groups and discussed about different scheduled topics.

Our last day late night wandering in the Madrid's street was very very interesting :)

Madrid is one of the best location in the world for Fine Arts. As a great art lover i didn't miss the chance from our busy schedule to visit the Museo Reina Sofía (Spain's national museum of 20th century art) to see the famous masterpiece - "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso. i did explore some floors of the museum with some of my fellow mozillians but not much for time shortage.

ITTW Conference 2013 Fall

This seminar is being organized to gather high school and college students together, and promote involvement in the IT industry amongst them. Venue: Auditorium, International School Dhaka, Bashundhara.

A small seven member Mozilla Bangladesh team attended the three hour conference.

We meet some celebrities like Nash Islam (CEO at G&R), Riyad Husain (CEO at Magnito Digital), Kazi Monirul Kabir (Country Consultant Bangladesh at Google), Fahim Mashroor (Founder and CEO at bdjobs.com) and so on. During the conference they share their sweet and sour experience, which was interesting and very inspiring. They talk about honesty, self judgment, creative ideas, how to manage time and most importantly entrepreneurship.

After the conference i talk with some of the speakers about Mozilla Bangladesh community and possible future coordination. We share our views and facts. The other Mozillians also talk with them about different topics. I display our "KEON" device, describe features and spread Mozilla by distributing WebFWD swag.

The Tumucumaque Virtual Park is launched

This is a initiative of Mozilla with the World Wildlife Fund to support conservation efforts in Brazil. Mozilla is working on the Mozilla Parks Project with the objective to improve the internet environment using the various wisdom of natural environment as the hint by comparing the natural environment and the internet environment. A fun and interactive way on the Internet to showcase the biodiversity in Tumucumaque park.

The Tumucumaque National Park (too-moo-koo-MAH-kay) is situated in northwestern Brazil inside the Amazon Rainforest state of Amapá. It’s bordered to the north by French Guyana and Suriname. It was declared a national park on August 23, 2002, with the collaboration of Brazil”s government and the WWF.

It has an area of 38,874 square kilometres (15,010 sq mi), making it the world”s largest tropical forest national park and larger than Belgium. This area even reaches 59,174 square kilometres (22,850 sq mi) when putting the Tumucumaque National Park together with the bordering Guiana Amazonian Park, a national park in French Guiana. However, this is still smaller than the three national park system in the Brazil/Venezuelan border, where the Parima-Tapirapeco, Serrania de la Neblina and Serra da Neblina national parks have a combined area of over 73,000 square kilometres (28,190 sq mi). It is an uninhabited region and is of high ecological value: Most of its animal species, mainly fish and aquatic birds, are not found in any other place in the world. It is a habitat for jaguars, primates, aquatic turtles, eagles, the rare agouti, macaws, white-bellied parrots, harpy eagles, giant anteaters and also Amazonian cats and pumas.

Mozilla Firefox has code-named the new beta (Firefox 4) Tumucumaque.

In the virtual park, tweets with the #mozpark tag take root and create the base of the park. As they are clicked on, trees, animals and water appear on the tweet. Click on one of the many animated animals in the park and see images of some of the inhabitants of Tumucumaque.
The virtual park was built by the Mozilla Japan team, in particular, Daisuke Akatsuka, who used new HTML, Javascript and CSS technologies that are supported in Firefox 4. Daisuke will be posting on the Hacks blog about the technologies involved in the park and there is more on the site at http://virtualpark.mozilla.org/docs/tech/index.php.en

As a supporter of World Wildlife Fund and Firefox we all are excited to see this component of the Tumucumaque campaign launch. The Parks program has been very helpful in terms of raising awareness of our not-for-profit status and allowing us to do good for other charities at the same time.
